The nurse didn’t react to Tessa’s flames. Jeff frowned. Not to their appearance or to their disappearance.
That is odd. Even though, odd is the wrong word choice. Suspicious is more like it. Unless she’s just being VERY professional and I’m being paranoid.
That isn’t impossible.
He studied the nurse’s expression, searching for any small giveaways as to what she was thinking.
But the nurse simply smiled at him. An ordinary, professionally friendly smile. No secrets were revealed. “Did you have any other questions or concerns, Mr. Farsigh?”
He hesitated for a small breath of a second. “No. Not at this time. I believe you answered all of the important ones.”
“Wonderful! They will be bringing in her afternoon snack in a little while. Did you or any of your guests need anything to eat or drink?”
“I don’t.” LM said it in a way that did not invite debate.
“I am fine.” Raven managed to slush those words, despite their lack of sibilant letters.
Jeff shook his head. “I don’t need anything at the moment, but thank you.”
“You’re very welcome! I’ll come back later to check her vitals.”
The nurse turned and left the room.
I’m being paranoid.
I’m sure I’m being paranoid.
Missy leaned forward to look at him. “Yeah?”
“That nurse…” He hesitated, not really wanting to put his paranoia into exact words. But I need to know. “Do you recognize that nurse?”
Missy nodded. “She was my nurse yesterday. I don’t know if you had a chance to talk with her yesterday, but she is very nice and friendly.”
He shook his head. “That’s not what I meant.”
Raven gave Jeff a bleary but puzzled look. “What is it, sir?”
“Do you…recognize her from The Institute, Tessa?”
“I don’t think so.” Missy lowered her gaze to her blanket. “But I didn’t get to meet that many of the people working there. Just Antioch and Professor Hrashna.”
LM’s feathers bristled. “You met Capernaum.” he said it like a javelin jab. The sharp edge in his voice caught Jeff’s attention. “Don’t forget Capernaum.”
Missy shrugged. “Capernaum belonged to you, not to me.”
LM slapped his cards down on the wheeled table. “I need to go for a walk.” He rose to his feet and stormed out of the room.
“I’ll be right back.” Jeff said to Missy. He hurried after the half-fey.
