Part 2579 – Wha?! Where’s Hildreth?!?

Something was amiss. Elsie was aware of it.

She knew it.

Something was wrong.

Something was missing.

The wrongness infiltrated her dream, disrupting it, breaking it.

Ending it.

Elsie grumbled something indecipherable and opened her eyes.

Hildreth was gone.

She sat up quickly and glanced around. “Hildreth?”

He was nowhere in the room.

She scrambled out of bed. I’m being ridiculous. He’s probably gone to the bathroom. But that thought did nothing to still the panic inside her heart.

Elsie ignored her body’s strong inclination to run amuck searching for him. He’s fine. Hildreth is fine. I don’t know why I’m overreacting. He’s fine.

Despite those thoughts, she walked briskly to the bedroom door, opened it, and stepped out into the hallway.

Only then did she hear the muffled singing and running water coming from the bathroom. See? Being ridiculous. I should go back to bed.

But she did not go to bed.

She headed straight to the bathroom door and opened it a crack.

Sure enough, he was in the shower. And yes. He was indeed singing.

“My baby likes me clean.
My baby likes me dirty.
But oooo oooo ooo!
I’m gonna take a showah
So, I can smell allllllll sweet and purty for her.”

Elsie opened the door a little wider to lean her head against the door frame. The steam from the shower obscured the finer details of Hildreth’s naked body He was just a silhouette inside the glass stall.

“Yeah! Yeah! Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaah!
I’m gonna take a showah!”

I love him.

“Uh-huh! Uh-huh! Uh-huh!
Gonna take a showah. Mmm-mm-mmm.
Gonna get soap suds everywhere.
Gonna get shampoo in my hair. Woo-oo-ooo!”

I can’t help it. He is so many good and wonderful things.

“Cuz, baby, ooooooooooo!
It’s time to take a showah!
Oh! Oh! Oh! Yeeeeeeeahhhh.”

I love just him and only him.

For the first time in a long time, she let herself remember what she had with Ambrose. She smiled at the distance of the memory. It seems so long ago. My feelings for him…That burning, hurting need for him to come back to me, to want me, to love me, to choose me…It’s gone. It’s all gone.

“Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm! Mm-hmm!
Look at all those fancy bubbles slide!
Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!
They all sliding waaaaaaaaay down.”

Elsie laughed softly. I’m glad. Because I know there is no way that Ambrose Smith could have ever made me this happy. I couldn’t have loved him and trusted him the way I love and trust Hildreth.

She entered the bathroom.

It isn’t even remotely possible.
