Clarice closed her eyes and relished the feeling of his arms encompassing her.
It feels so good to be in a man’s arms…this man’s arms. John Addleston’s arms.
“We’ll never be able to duplicate what we had with and how we felt for our spouses.” John said. “But I’m not expecting that. I don’t want that. What we have is something different, something special, something completely brand new.”
“And that is what you want?”
“Mm-hmm. Do you?”
She hugged him a little tighter. “If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be out here with you right now.”
He continued to rub her back.
If only we could just stay like this. If only I could just hold onto him forever.
I sound like sixteen-year-old me writing in my love journal. But it’s true. I wish I could keep him here in my arms.
“You feel so good in my arms.” she said.
“And you in mine.”
“Can’t you stay?”
He reluctantly released her. “I’m sorry, but I really do need to get back to Sarah.”
“So, that wasn’t a ploy to get some alone time with me?”
He laughed self-consciously. “Maybe it was a little.”
She grinned. “I knew it! You naughty, naughty man. Mm. Could you hold me just a little bit longer?”
He embraced her again. “Just a little bit longer.”
Elsie led Hildreth through a complicated series of dance steps.
“Hmm.” he said. “I’m very impressed that you know dance steps like that.”
“Well, if that impresses you,” She spread her hands on his lower back. “prepare to be gobsmacked.”
“Elsie baby, gobsmack away.”
Her eyes sparkled with glee. “Gladly.” She lowered him into a dip as Jeff finished the song.
Hildreth must have expected that move because he leaned back without any stiffness or resistance. He looked up at her in silent adoration.
This wonderful idiot of a man…
“Hildreth, can we go home? Can we please go home? Can we go home right now?”
He chuckled. “If I say ‘Nah’, would you drop me?”
“Who knows? I might.”
“And what happens if I say ‘Sure hot diggity dog thing!’?”
“I’ll throw you over my shoulder and run home with you.”
He laughed. “And I do believe you would. Oh, Elsie. My Elsie. I love you so much.”
“Does that count as a yes or a no?”
“Hmm. Are there any penalties for ‘Maybe’?”
“Then, I’ll take my chances and say, Maybe.”
She returned him to a full, upright position. “We’ll discuss the penalty later.”
“Oooo! Elsie bein’ all hot and mysterious. Mm-mmm-mmmmmm!”
She smiled. “Idiot.”
The photographer rushed over to them. “Ahh! They just brought the cake in. I MUST have pictures of you two cutting the cake.”
Elsie shook her head. “And your Maybe just turned into a Nah.”
“Not necessarily, Els. It’s just under a cake delay. You know, like a rain delay, but it’s cake.”
She laughed. “Like I said before, your mind is a most mysterious place.”
Hildreth grinned. “It certainly is!”
“You’re not supposed to agree that readily.”
The photographer sighed. “This bantering is adorable and all, but CAKE!”
“Coming!” Hildreth said.
