Part 1437 – The Results Of Preyuna’s Hummingbird Scan

The nae bi sha sidled off Isellta and contemplated him.

Long torsoed body.

Soft skin.

Hard bones.

Chewy muscles.

Fresh meat.

My prey.

I’ll break his legs first, so he can’t escape.

Then, I’ll snap his wrists, crack his arms, unhinge his shoulders, so he can’t fight back.

Not that he’ll be able to—-

His ears twitched at an all too familiar sound: the low, bumblebee-like thrum of a hummingbird’s wings.

He transformed into his true form and set his clawed hands on Isellta’s abdomen.

He waited.

The crimson and silver hummingbird appeared high in the darkness. Its silver wings flashed as sharp and as clean as a well-polished steak knife.

It flew.

All the way down to him.

He bared his shark-like teeth.

It hovered before him as if it were uncertain about its next move.

“I know who you are. I didn’t recognize you last time. Now, I do. Preyuna.”

The hummingbird puffed out its chest feathers.

“You. You are always trying to disrupt my meals. Disrupt this one—” He extended his claws. “—and skinny blond here gets a new ventilation system in his gut.”

The hummingbird squeaked a long and furious message at him.

He laughed. “That’s what you think. But Isellta is mine. I have him all tangled up good around all of my claws. I can do anything I want to him and he will respond to me.”

The nae bi sha sheathed his claws and touched Isellta’s throat with one finger. “Just watch and see.” He dragged his finger down the line of Isellta’s throat.

The fey didn’t wake up, but his breathing changed.

He dragged his finger from Isellta’s throat down to the middle of his chest.

“uhh uhh uhh…robin…”

He leaned forward and bit Isellta’s neck.

The fey let out a cry of delight. “robin…robin…more…more…”

The hummingbird disappeared.

Preyuna’s wings flared out. The individual feathers bristled.

“What did you see?” Jay asked. “Preyuna. What did you see?”

“Stupid. Little. Boy.”

“STUPID. LITTLE. BOY.” She whispered a furious sounding spell into her hands and flung it at Isellta before Jay could even start to react.

Isellta rose up into the air and dropped hard on the floor.

Jay jumped off the bed. Just as Preyuna rushed over to Isellta and proceeded to beat his chest with her fists.

“STOP!” He grabbed her wrists. “I knew you would hurt him. I knew it.”

“Shut up! You don’t know. You don’t know anything. He isn’t worth it. He isn’t worth all of this stress and fuss. He isn’t worth one breath in my body.”

“He’s worth everything!” Jay released her hands and took a moment to calm down. “What did you see?”

“I saw nothing but a stupid boy who doesn’t understand how much danger he’s in.”

“Is he safe? Is he well? Is he—”

“I don’t care. I honestly don’t care. I…” Preyuna looked down at Isellta. Her voice softened as she said, “I hate him.”

She kicked Isellta’s side.

Jay pushed her away. “Stop it!”

She started to whisper a spell into her hands.

“Before you go blasting me away, tell me. Is he okay? Is he…in one piece?”

Preyuna lowered her hands. “Yes. But he won’t be for long. The nae bi sha is still there. He holds Isellta in his thrall. And I am nothing to Isellta.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You should be. Isellta is going to die right in front of you.”

Jay turned pale. “What can I do? I have to do something. I can’t…I can’t let him die. I won’t! I need to—”

“There’s nothing you can do, stupid human.”

“There is! There—there has to be. There…”

“He has to choose to leave. You can’t make that choice for him, human. It must be his own free choice.”

“Why? Why is it like this? Why can’t I help him?”

“Because you can’t. It doesn’t work that way.”

“Why? Who says it can’t? Who made this stupid rule? Who?”

Preyuna scoffed. “And now you’re just being emotional and irrational. I’m leaving now. If I stay in here, I’ll wind up throwing you at the wall. Repeatedly.” She strolled over to the door and opened it. “I will say this. Robin, the real Robin, is his only hope.”

She left the room.

    1. Thank you so much! 😀

I really like writing her character. She has so much pride and dignity. I kind of feel bad for her when Mark Caten bullies her, even though she can be quite the bully to poor Isellta.

Preyuna’s such a dark gray character I sometimes wonder if she deserves a happy ending. But we’ll just have to see what happens at the end. 😉 Maybe she’ll be able to return to her kingdom. Maybe she won’t. We’ll see.
