Mrs. Hastings looked down at Missy.
She’s just so strange. There’s so much about her that I just don’t get. Even if she explained it all to me, I probably still wouldn’t get her.
As for her relationship with that vampire, I really don’t understand that. Vampires are monsters that think of only one thing every second of every day.
But he is very genteel. And, while I may not see him the way she does, I will grant that he has very striking features. Especially those red eyes.
How did Robin wind up with him? They are such opposites. How did he fall in love with a fey?
As for that other vampire…What was his name? Ambrose? How does he fit in with their group? He isn’t as posh as Raven, but he isn’t as coarse as Robin.
Why are they all living under the same roof? That’s what I really don’t get. Vampires are selfish and territorial. How can three vampires stand living together?
I just don’t get any of it.
She released Missy’s shoulders. “I’m going to check on Robin. I’ll be right back.”
Missy didn’t respond and Mrs. Hastings chose to leave it at that.
Barbara smiled at Ambrose. “You know, your name is impossible to shorten into a nickname.”
He grinned. “Oh, is it?”
‘Mm-hmm. I’ve considered all of the possibilities. Best I could come up with was Ambry and A.Rose.”
He laughed out loud. “A.Rose? Thank you for not calling me that. I don’t think I’d ever get used to that. Besides, I like hearing you call me Ambrose. You make my name sound beautiful.”
She blushed. “I’ve noticed you haven’t tried to call me by any of the acceptable nicknames for Barbara.”
“I am not calling you Barbie.”
“Besides, Barbara is a beautiful name. Why shorten it?”
Mrs. Hastings intruded onto the scene. She gave them a scrutinizing look.
Ambrose dipped his head in a slight bow. “Mrs. Hastings, this is my fiancée, Miss Barbara Addleston. Barbara, this is Robin’s mother.”
“Oh!” Barbara held out her hand and Mrs. Hastings shook it. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Mrs. Hastings smiled. “Likewise. Do you live here too?”
Barbara blushed and shook her head. “It wouldn’t be a good idea.” She looked up at Ambrose.
He looked at her with so much love she wanted to throw herself into his arms and kiss him like crazy.
She took his hand instead and squeezed it. Love you. she whispered into his mind.
I love you too.
“I just came here to pay him a visit. I was well over-due.”
He kissed Barbara’s hand. “Yes, you were. I’m so glad you’re here now. I’ve missed you.”
The warmth in his voice as he said those last three words gave her goosebumps. Does he even know how much he affects me?
Barbara looked at his bright black eyes and smiled.
I think he does.
He looked puzzled and amused all at the same time. “What?”
“I’ll tell you later.”
And just like that, I’ve been kicked out of the conversation.
Maybe even more than that.
Kicked out of existence.
I could excuse myself, but I don’t see any point in doing so.
Mrs. Hastings walked past the loving couple and entered Robin’s room.
