Part 2452 – We’re Leaving Now.

Sammy slouched against the wall and leaned his head back. “I hope I don’t have to go down there after Raven.”

Deliosa smiled. “I’m not going to even ask why.”

He raised his head with a questioning look.

“Because it’s obvious. Our kind doesn’t deal well with small spaces.”

He smiled grimly. “Isn’t that the truth?”

She moved closer to him and touched her forehead to his chest.

His smile softened. “But not all small spaces are bad.” Roses and red tulips blossomed on the marble wall behind him. Sammy rested his hands on either side of her waist. “Not bad at all.”

“Is it wrong that I just want to get it over with?”

He kissed the top of her head.

“I want to go to your elder and—” She sighed. “—I want to know if she deems me worthy to be your mate.”

“I know. I feel the same way.” He didn’t voice his fears, because he knew that she felt them too. Putting it into words was not necessary.

Raven walked through the doorway. He looked somewhere between annoyed and perturbed.

“What’s wrong?” Sammy asked.

Raven shook his head. “Robin was not down there. I was wrong.”

Sammy raised an eyebrow. “Shouldn’t you be glad about it?”

“I am glad. Indeed, I am. I simply do not understand why that particular monitor pulled at me so. It is strange. Perhaps Ambrose will have an explanation.”

“Hmm. Maybe.” Sammy glanced around. Several of the crystals in the overhead chandeliers cracked without shattering. “I don’t like this place. There’s too much….Mark Caten stink here. Can we leave now?”

“Indeed. There is no further need for us to be here.” Raven headed to the front door.

Deliosa took Sammy’s hands.

He smiled at her. The cracked crystals repaired themselves and sparkled better than new. Sammy let her pull him away from the wall. “I love you, Lee.”

She leaned into his space and kissed him. “I love you too.”

Red roses and red tulips appeared on the dungeon door in broad paint strokes.

He interlocked their fingers together. “She’ll approve. My elder will see us together and she will approve.”

“I hope so.”

“I know so.” He let her lead him to the front door.

I had him. Preyuna glared at the distant city lights. I had Ambrose Smith right where I wanted him to be and he slipped away. I shouldn’t have left him. Or I should have put up a spell to keep him from leaving. But I didn’t think about it. Of all the stupidest things! I didn’t think about it!

And now he’s gone. If Mark ever finds out that I let Ambrose Smith escape, breaking my wings will be the least painful thing he does to me.

A slew of nightjarren insects, a distant Earth subspecies of The Collectors, flew overhead. Their red and blue bioluminescence flashed in the darkness.

Preyuna watched them fly past Mark Caten’s borders. Her hands lit up as she tapped into her base magic. She raised them and focused on the flashing insects.

The front door closed, startling her. She lowered her hands and spun around.

Raven, Deliosa, and Sammy walked away from the house.

A smile spread across her face. Well. If I can’t have Ambrose, what about Raven? I’m sure I can convince him to help me. If not, Ambrose would gladly exchange himself for his friend. I’m sure of it.
