Sammy and Lee flew side-by-side with their wings almost touching. He imagined their milk-white baby clinging to her back. Reality annihilated that lovely daydream. Not only was she a dragon without a kaandelinao, but she was also a haavrnesh.
She had no family and she would never be able to give him a family. There would never be any milk-white babies with their blended DNA in their future.
And they would have to reveal this information to his mother. There was no sense in keeping it secret, for time would reveal the truth on its own.
Lee glanced at him. What’s wrong? You seem…worried? Is this about tomorrow?
Yes. We’re quickly running out of hours and minutes.
We still have some time left, Samer. I am still here. Her wing tip deliberately bumped his wing tip. She purred and it sounded like a smile. And I’ll beat you to Pinkerlee. She flew past him.
He trumpeted and chased after her.
She led him in a joyous game of pursuit. High. Low. In corkscrew dives.
He matched her every move. The chase gradually became a dance of love and of joy.
Sunflowers, daisies, red rose vines, and red tulips decorated the scenery far below.
Raven stood under a store front’s canopy and mentally called Sammy’s name again. Sammy hadn’t responded yet. So, Raven assumed that he was out of range.
But he kept calling for him.
As Barbara drove down the highway heading to Henspence, Ambrose became very quiet. She looked over at him. “Are you nervous?”
“Very.” Ambrose said. “I can’t believe I’m going back to Caten’s place. It’s crazy, you know? I’ve given him plenty of reasons to hate me, to want to physically and psychologically hurt me. And here I am rushing into his home base…like a mouse running into a trap.”
Barbara widened her eyes. “Do you really think this is a trap?”
“This is Mark Caten we’re talking about. If he finds out that there is some emotional connection between Robin and me, he will exploit it. That’s how he works. So, it could very well be a trap.”
“What should we do?”
He shook his head. “That’s the zinger. Even if it is a trap, I can’t do nothing. If there’s a chance Caten has Robin, I can’t. I can’t leave him there. I can’t do that to Robin.”
Barbara’s heart warmed. “You’ve come a long way from when you wanted to leave him at Olessa’s place. Do you remember?”
He nodded. “Who would have guessed that I would grow to love him as much as I do?”
She turned onto the exit ramp. “Well. We’re going to be there in a matter of minutes. Here’s hoping we get the answers we need.”
“And be able to leave without any unnecessary drama.”
“And it won’t be a trap.”
Ambrose sighed. “That would be nice.”
