Isellta watched Jay check his phone messages.
He’s doing this for me.
He’s done so much for me and I don’t know why. I don’t understand why he cares so much about me.
I don’t deserve it.
He frowned slightly.
So, what do I deserve? Nothing? Jay would say no to that. So would Maelin. But isn’t it true?
“Until you can learn how to pull your wings into your back, you cannot eat with us.”
“I’m trying my best. I just—”
His mother glared at him. “It isn’t your best and you know it. You will sit in here all by yourself.”
“But, Momma. I wanna be with you and Da.”
Her expression hardened. “You don’t deserve it.”
So, what do I deserve? If I asked Jay that question, what would he say? What would be a good answer to a question like that?
Something?
Anything?
What do I deserve if the answer isn’t nothing?
“Ha! I actually found one.” Jay pressed a couple of buttons on his keypad before handing the phone to Isellta. “Here you go.”
The fey took the phone and listened to the message.
Robin’s voice spoke in his ear. “Darnation! Here we go playin’ phone tag again. Hey. Case you didn’t recognize my voice, this is me. Robin.”
Isellta exhaled a soft, “Oh.”
This is him.
This voice.
This Robin is my Robin.
“Hey, I’m on my way to Henspence. Tell my ‘sellta I’m comin’.”
My ‘sellta. I’m his.
He smiled.
I’m his.
“Tell him I love him. I love him so much. Yeah, I know it’s dumb and stupid gettin’ you to tell him that when I’ll be there in a matter of minutes. But I just want him to know. I want him to know now.”
“Oh, Robin.”
“‘sellta. My beautiful ‘sellta. I love you. I’ll be there soon. I’ll see you.”
“I love you too.”
“End of message. Press 1 for Spanish instructions. Press 2 for Italian instructions. Press 3 for Japanese instructions. Press 4 to repeat the message. Press 5 for—“
Isellta pressed 4 and Robin spoke in his ear again.
I don’t know if I deserve him.
I don’t really know what I deserve.
But I know.
I know what I want.
“Case you didn’t recognize my voice, this is me. Robin.”
I want him.
I want to be with him.
I want to be in his arms.
I want to be home with him.
“Robin. My Robin.”
“‘sellta. My beautiful ‘sellta.”
“My beautiful Robin. You deserve to be with someone better than me, but I want you. I love you.”
Robin.
Where are you?
