“It’s okay. It’s okay.” Maelin repeated it over and over while he calmed down. As soon as he was back to a normal breathing pattern, she carefully released her hold on him, all the while repeating her mantra “It’s okay. It’s okay.”
He shivered as she let him go.
“It’s okay. You’re okay. I will not hurt you.”
He regarded her with an expectant fear.
It reminded her of Isellta.
She went down on her knees. “Please. Please help me. Robin is pretty well knocked out. I can tell just by looking at him that a simple tap on his shoulder is not going to do a thing.”
His expression became guarded. “What do you expect me to do?”
“Please help me.”
His wings rustled uneasily. “You want me to turn into Isellta, don’t you?”
“What happens to me if I refuse to do it?”
“Nothing. I’ll just have to find a different way to wake him up.”
LM glanced around the room as if he were searching for someone.
“Will you do it?”
His wings rustled again. “Can I trust you?”
Maelin sat back on her feet and said, “My full name is Maelin Tse Lae Razzhrrnae. My mother was Carrah Tse Laende, Fey of the Dryad Woods. My father was Bohai Razzhrrnae, a Chinese peace dragon from the Lower Province.”
He went still. “You’re part dragon.”
“Part Chinese peace dragon. As such, I have a lot of power, but it is not in my nature to use that power to hurt those weaker than me. I will not hurt you, half-fey.”
He bowed and pressed his fist above his heart. “Then, I will help you.”
LM approached the bed. He looked down at Robin and mentally agreed with Maelin’s assessment.
Robin was out cold. Tapping and yelling wasn’t going to do any good. Drastic measures were definitely called for.
He closed his eyes and he saw Isellta inside Robin’s mind.
The shape of his face.
The shape of his body.
The sound of his voice
The size and width of his wings.
LM took a breath and let the change come over him. He didn’t fight it.
His body slimmed.
His face restructured.
His wings spread wide and luxuriant.
LM gasped and opened his eyes. He checked out his wings.
But they were not his wings.
The trec lun bone was so straight and strong.
His wings so perfectly shaped.
He flapped them and gasped with joy. “Oh! Oh, is that what it feels like? Oh!”
He folded them against his back. The trec lun bone bent as it was supposed to. It made him want to cry from jealousy and happiness.
He tried to pull them into his back.
That was one thing he could not do.
He tried again and again.
“Isellta can’t pull his wings into his back.” Maelin said. “He has the wrong skin type on his back. It won’t let him pull his wings through.”
So, this Isellta isn’t completely perfect. That makes me feel better.
LM sat next to Robin on the bed and tapped into his memories again. He saw the way Isellta touched him. His fingers gliding down the scar.
If I do that, he’ll wake up.
Then, what? He’ll see me and assume that I’m really Isellta. He would make wild advances that I don’t want.
LM shook his head in frustration. “This is both the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. This is what we’re supposed to do. But not like this.”
Maelin came over to him. “What are you thinking?”
“I’ll have to do this differently. Need to do something more subtle.”
‘What did you have in mind?”
He tilted his head and blinked quickly. “I don’t understand. I look and sound like Isellta, but you aren’t falling for it. Why is that?”
“Chinese peace dragons are immune to fey mind tricks.”
“But you aren’t a whole.”
“It still applies. So, what are you going to do?”
He took a deep breath and exhaled. “Don’t worry. I know what I need to do.”
Even if I don’t like it.
LM leaned forward, avoiding all physical contact with the sleeping vampire, and whispered in his ear, “Robin. Robin, come to me. I need you. Please. Please. Don’t leave me like this. Come to me. Save me. Come now. I need you to come now. I love you. My lovely Robin, I love you.”
