Part 1828 – The Return Of “Half An Hour”

The taxi from Tom and Tom and Toya’s Topline Taxis came a lot faster than Ambrose had expected.

Should I be impressed or annoyed? From what I remember, they didn’t come this fast for me.

The taxi driver lowered his window and gave him a suspicious look. “Hey, Mac. You seem familiar to me. Have we met before?”

“I doubt…” Ambrose narrowed his eyes.

I do know him. He’s the one who kept telling me that it would take him a half hour to drive me to Sammy’s Place.

He said that I had germs.

“No. We’ve never met before.” Ambrose smiled, ignoring the temptation to bare his fangs. “I just have one of those faces.”

“Huh. Well, whatever. Get in the back seat, Mac. I don’t have all day.”

Ambrose sighed. “Neither do I.”

Maelin walked down the street with her senses on high alert.

But it was all for nothing.

There were too many scents, too many people, and no Robin. His scent just wasn’t in the air.

It would be easy enough to give up and go back home. But how could I? Isellta needs me to find Robin.

Jay needs me to find Robin.

I can’t disappoint either of them.

So, she kept walking with no real destination in mind.

Robin stared hard at the window as LM scooted next to him. “I don’t get why YOU have to sit in the middle.”

“Sorry.” LM said. “I would have sat at the other end, but my wings aren’t flexible.  My right one would have been pressed against the door.”

“Well, ain’t that a shame. You coulda stayed home.”

“No. I didn’t want to be alone.”

I’m doin’ it all o’er again. Pushin’ and shovin’ and he ain’t done a thing to deserve it.

Just like ‘sellta.

I don’t wanna be like that no more. I wanna be better. I wanna be someone Isellta can trust.

“You ain’t got a thing to be sorry for. I’m just bein’ a jerk as always. I’m sorry.”

LM’s wings rustled and Robin had a good idea why.

“What? You tryin’ to flap those wings of yours?”

“No. They just do it on their own. My wings are too stiff to flap, but they always try.”

“You don’t gotta explain further. I get it. When you’re happy and you know it, you just gotta flap your stupid wings.”

Just like him.

Robin rubbed his right shoulder.

Just like Isellta.

Ambrose sat on the opposite side of LM and closed the door. He leaned forward and bashed his fist on the plastic divider between the front and the back seat. “Hey! Are we going now or what?”

“Keep your clothes on, boss. These things take time.”

“Huh? All you have to do is stick the key into the ignition and turn it. How much time does that actually need to take?”

“Half an hour.”

Ambrose growled and flopped back into his seat. “LM, wake me when we get there. Whenever that will be.”

“Trust me, boss.” the driver said. “It’ll take me exactly half an hour.”
