Maelin ended the call. She grabbed Jay’s shoulder and shook him until he woke up.
“wha?” Jay opened his eyes. “What?” He let go of Isellta and sat up. “He’s coming…now?”
She smiled. “I called him. I spoke to him.”
“And he didn’t hang up on you?”
“Not at all.”
“Well, God be praised. That’s quite a miracle. How’d you do it? What did you say?”
“Nothing really. I barely got a chance to harangue him about it.”
“But he’s coming? He’s really coming?”
She laughed. “Yes!”
He hugged her.
She hugged him back. “He loves him. Jay, there’s no doubt about it. Robin loves our Isellta.”
Jay chuckled softly. “There you go again, calling him ours.”
She sighed happily in his arms. “Then, maybe we should adopt him and make it official.”
He kissed the side of her head. “It is tempting. I wonder what he’d say about that.” He kissed the same spot before releasing her. “Mae, do you think Isellta will make it to Sunday?”
She looked down at the unconscious fey’s blond hair and black wings. “He looks like an angel, doesn’t he?”
She watched his breathing.
Such a long pause in between inhale and exhale. Will Robin’s arrival make any difference at this point? Or are we already too late?
“I hope he’ll make it.” she said softly.
Isellta opened his eyes and stared listlessly into the dark.
A hand came to rest on his chest.
His heart fluttered. “Ro…”
“Shh. Close your eyes, my little fey. Robin’s here. Robin’s right here.”
Robin kissed his forehead. “I’m here.”
Isellta’s wings fluttered weakly.
He’s so weak.
The nae bi sha licked his lips.
I could eat him now.
He picked up Isellta’s nearest hand.
A couple of small bites.
A finger up to the first knuckle.
Or maybe bite off his nose.
The creature chuckled in the dark.
Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise for him to wake up to? I wonder how many bites it would take before he woke up. One? Two? Ten?
He licked his lips again.
But there is still a small spark inside of him. I must wait for that spark to go out. Otherwise, he’ll blast me away like he did to my mate.
He turned Isellta’s hand over and licked the full length of his palm.
Mmm. Such a decadent taste. I can’t wait to take a bite.
But I will wait.
He chuckled again.
But I won’t have to wait too long.
One more day at the very most.
He won’t last much longer than that.
“I’m here, my little fey. I’m here.”
Isellta smiled, even as he struggled to breathe.
