Jay rinsed out his mouth and splashed cold water on his face.
“It’s called ish vrae sae. It means he’s slipping further and further away from you.”
Maybe that means something different to a fey.
Maybe it means…
Jay remembered Preyuna’s expression as she said those words.
It means the same exact thing.
He’s going to die.
Isellta’s going to die.
Jay pulled a washcloth off the towel rack and dried his face.
I can’t let this happen.
I need to do something.
He uncovered his face as the obvious answer came to him.
I have to go back to Pinkerlee tonight.
I can’t wait for Robin to get my message.
I can’t wait for Raven to make up his mind.
I must go back.
So, I will.
Dave sighed. “Haaaaank.”
“Not now, Dave.”
“I’m bored.” He slouched against the wall. “So bored.”
Hank checked his watch. “Just two more hours before midnight. Then, our relief will come and then—-”
“Then, I won’t be bored at all.”
Hank chuckled. “Neither will I.”
A couple of minutes passed in happy silence.
“Hank? Where did Preyuna go?”
“I don’t know.”
One full minute of silence.
“I hope she didn’t go after Doll Face again. Especially after what Caten said. You know, about her raping him.”
Hank frowned behind his mask. “Do you think she really does that to him?”
“I hope not. He’s too pretty to be abused like that.”
Hank’s jealousy perked up its messed up head. “Dave. Dave, you do love me, right?”
“I mean it. Do you love me? I mean, really love me? You don’t just see me as something to occupy your time while you keep an eye out for something better?”
“Hank.” Dave set his weapon against the wall and removed Hank’s mask. “You are the hottest, most romantic guy ever.”
Hank removed Dave’s mask.
“I’ll never find a partner better than you, not even if I tried. And trust me. I’m not trying. I just happen to notice when another guy’s hot.” He smiled and it was like a week’s worth of rainbows. “I’m not being unfaithful to you. I’m just admiring God’s finer creations.”
Hank laughed despite himself.
“Hank. I love love love LOVE you.”
“I know, babe. I just get a little paranoid.”
“You’re the best thing in my life, Dave. I don’t want you to leave me.”
Dave kissed him.
Hank closed his eyes and melted into his kiss.
Dave ended it too soon.
They opened their eyes at the same time.
The sight of Dave’s brown eyes looking into his own made Hank feel hungry and thirsty and off balance all at the same time.
“I won’t leave you. I’m all yours.” He stroked Hank’s face.
I am helpless. This one man makes me as helpless as a damsel. “And I am yours. Always yours.”
“Only two more hours before midnight?”
“Unfortunately.” Hank admired his lover. “I wish it were midnight right now.”
Dave smiled. “So do I.”
Hank gave him a quick kiss. “We better get back to our stations.” He put his mask back on. “I don’t want to get into trouble.”
Dave sighed heavily and put his mask on as well. “I know.” He returned to his assigned spot. “I sure hope Preyuna isn’t doing bad stuff to Doll Face.”
Preyuna kissed Isellta – a hard, pressing kiss that would have shocked any other man back into their senses.
But Isellta slept on.
“Wake up. Wake up, darn you. Listen to me. Hear my voice, Isellta Mal Hoven. I am your queen. Hear me. Listen to me. Obey me.” She rubbed the back of her fingers down the side of his face. “Come back to me. I will be better. I will be kinder to you, as long as you do as I say. Please. Hear me. Return to me. Isellta. Isellta.”
The bathroom door opened and Jay reentered the bedroom. “Hey! You get away from him.”
She sat up and regarded him with a belligerent expression. “You have no authority over me, human.”
“This isn’t a matter of authority. It’s a matter of safety. You are a proven danger to Isellta’s physical and mental well being. Get away from him. Now. Or I will physically pick you up, toss you over my shoulder, and physically throw you out the door.”
She rose from the bed. “You disgusting low life.”
“I need to go back to Pinkerlee tonight. I need you to leave this room and stay out. I will not have you hurt him ever again.”
“I am not Mark Caten. Believe it or not, I do not enjoy hurting him.”
“I don’t care.” He marched over to her and pointed at the door. “Out. Now.”
“Your assertiveness is really unnecessary. I was about to leave anyway.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder and left the room.
