I won’t have to deal with that peace dragon.
I will have to deal with worse – her lover.
Mark Caten’s guard.
He’ll yell at me and shove me out of the room like the bull-headed moose of little brains that he is.
He’s all emotion and no sense, just like any other human.
Her eyes turned white. Speaking of humans with stunted brain development…
Dave sashayed over to her and dropped his arm around her neck. “Sooo, what are you doing outside Jay’s room?”
She glared at him.
He quickly released her neck.
“I should ask you the same thing.”
“Who? Me? I’m just passing through. Going from that end of the hall to that end of the hall. You, on the other hand, aren’t passing through. Even I can tell that. You’re loitering outside Jay’s door and at this time of night? Nuh-uh.. Don’t do it. He’s a one-woman man and Maelin is that one woman. You just don’t stand a chance against the power of their love.” He tapped his index finger against his lips. “I don’t think he goes for other men, which is a shame.”
“Oh, too bad for you.” Her voice dripped poisoned vinegar. “Why don’t you go away and leave me alone?”
“Oh. Oh! Ohhhh! I get it now! You’re checking in on Doll Face.”
“If you don’t leave—”
“Hey! I wanna see him too! He’s sooooooooo cute! I wanna take him home and pour honey all over—”
“Stop! I’m not interested in listening to your perverted idea of fun.” Her eyes returned to normal. “But yes. You may knock on the door for me and you may follow me inside.”
Jay covered up and pulled Isellta into his arms.
Isellta’s body was too limp and still too warm, but Jay held him close. “I’m here, kid. Whether you can hear me or not, I’m right here and I won’t leave you.”
Disappointment crushed his chest as he subconsciously expected Isellta to speak and grab the back of his shirt and Isellta did neither.
His lower lip trembled. “I’m sorry, kid.” He hugged him tighter. “I’m sorry.”
Someone knocked on the door.
Jay released Isellta and rolled onto his back. “Who is it?”
“It’s me! Dave. Can I come in?”
“Sure. Door isn’t locked.”
The door opened and Dave ran into the room. He stopped short when he saw Jay with Isellta. “Ohhh. No fair, Jay! I wanted to get him first.”
Jay sat up. “What?”
Preyuna strode into the room.
Jay got out of bed. “What do you want, Preyuna.”
She arched an eyebrow at him. “That is a stupid question, guard. You know what I want.”
Dave sauntered over to the bed. “I’m telling you: You’re wasting your time. He is so not into you.” He hopped onto the bed and sat beside Isellta. “hm. No pushing away this time. Good.”
“But that isn’t why I’m here.”
Jay frowned. “If you’ve come to take him away—-”
“Stupid guard. No. I just wanted to check on Isellta.”
Dave raked his fingers through Isellta’s hair. “And I just wanted to check him out. So cute!”
“How is he doing?” Preyuna asked.
Jay shrugged helplessly.
He nodded. “His skin is so warm and dry. I think he’s dehydrated. We need to get him to a hospital.”
“But he can’t leave Mark Caten’s borders.”
“Why don’t you just have the doctor come here?” Dave asked. “Tell them to load up their IVing supplies and—”
“It won’t do any good, guard. It is a universal truth that the three hardest substances in the world are: diamonds, vampire skin, and fey skin in that exact order.”
Dave brushed his knuckles against Isellta’s face. “I don’t know about that. His skin seems plenty soft to me. Oh! I just have to lick him!”
Jay quietly walked over to his fellow guard and pulled him away from Isellta.
Jay released him and sat on the bed. “So. We can’t take him to the hospital. We can’t get him on an IV. What do we do?”
“I say we kiss him to pieces.”
Jay and Preyuna gave him equally incredulous looks.
“What? It worked for Sleeping Beauty, right?” Dave held his fists up against his chest. His eyes sparkled. “Maybe I’ll be the one to awaken him, which would make me his one true love. And we’d go riding off into the sunset on a gallant white steed. I’m not sure how that would all work out with Hank, but—-”
“We don’t have any horses here.” Preyuna said.
“Hey! Don’t ruin my romantic fantasies.”
Jay thought about it.
He chuckled. “I can’t believe that I’m going to say this, but let’s give it a try.”
Dave raised his arms in the air and waved them wildly. “Ooo! I go first!”
Preyuna scoffed. “Oh, what a surprise.”
