“There are two methods to cut a perfect piece of cake: One – Coat the knife with a layer of softened butter.” Raven shook his head. “I have never cared for that method. After all, no sane person wants to eat cake that tastes of butter. Two – Roll the knife in a generous amount of flour. I personally prefer that method. The flour adds a nice counterbalance to the cake’s sweetness.”
“Or you could just use a Teflon knife.” said Robin.
Raven glanced at him.
Robin raised his hands in a defensive gesture. “I ain’t tryin’ to steal your thunder or nothin’. I’m just sayin’.”
“I do not have a Teflon knife, sir.”
“Oh.” Robin closed the dishwasher. “Hey, where’s Ambrose?”
Ambrose stepped out on the porch.
He looked up at the night sky.
Five more days.
Only five more days.
The screen door opened behind him. “Hey.” Barbara wrapped her arms around his chest.
He sighed as her body pressed against his back. “Can’t we stay like this all night, Barbara?”
“mmm, it’s tempting.”
“And that’s the problem, isn’t it?”
“Always.” She released him. “I need to call my dad. Make sure he’s okay.”
“I need to head back home to make sure that everyone there is safe.” He turned to face her. “And I’m leaving you again. I honestly wish I could stay. If you told me yes…”
“But you know we can’t.”
“It’s only five more days, kitten.”
“I know. I wish today were Saturday. I wish it were Sunday. I wish.”
She brushed the back of her fingers against the side of his face.
He closed his eyes and leaned into her touch.
“So do I, Ambrose.”
He opened his eyes.
She smiled. “And yes. Yes, I will marry you. You with all of your ups and downs, betters and worsts. I will take you as you are. Everything that you are, both the good and the bad. I don’t want to marry anyone but you.”
“And I want only you. Nothing in the world will ever change that. No one will change that.” He smiled. “I love you, Barbara Addleston. I love just you and everything that you are.”
He kissed her. “And I always will.”
Barbara watched him walk down the three porch stairs.
So many things can happen in that small amount of time.
He could get staked.
Ambrose stopped and smiled at her.
She couldn’t resist,
She ran to him and hugged him.
He hugged her.
“Be careful. Please be careful.”
“Don’t worry, love.” He kissed her head. “I’m always careful.”
