Part 345 – Going From A Bad Memory Dream To A Bad Meditation Vision Is Enough To Give A Grown Man A Bad Headache.

The memory returned and played out inside Hildreth’s dream:

The wind hit and pushed Hildreth, but he ran against it. The exertion stole his breath, but he thought of his master and kept pushing forward.

I’m coming. I’m coming.

He reached the dojo.

He couldn’t breathe.

The rice paper door was torn open.

“No. NO!”

He ran inside.

Shreds of rice paper blew around the room.

“Master Initskay?”

The wind howled and whirshed outside, but with the exception of the flittering papers, the inside was silent.

He hurried through the darkened building.

As he approached the training room, his foot skidded on a wet spot on the wooden floor.

He crouched and touched it.

It wasn’t water and it wasn’t the only spot. There were others. Many others.

He ran the rest of the way.

The training room door was shredded as well.

“No. Master!”

He entered the training room.

Master Initskay sat huddled up in the furthest corner, scratching his arm in long, deliberate lines.

Hildreth approached him.

“Master?”

“It hurts. Of course. Yes. Of course, it hurts.”

Hildreth crouched before him. “Master. Are you…”

“It hurts, but nothing is hurt. Look. Nothing. Not a scratch. Nothing. Nothing.”

“Master. Did they touch you? Did..”

He raised his head.

The tell-tale marks turned white on his neck. “Yes. They did. Mayhew.” His pupils widened until his irises were narrow rims. “They did. I’m one of them now.” Tears fell down his face. “I’m a vampire. Hildreth. Mayhew. Don’t let me be a vampire. It hurts. Everything hurts and I’m so hungry and I know.” He broke down into a hard cry. “I know what I’m hungry for. Stake me.”

Hildreth stumbled up to his feet.

“Mayhew. Stake me.”

He shook his head.

“STAKE ME!”

Hildreth turned and ran.

***

Hildreth opened his eyes.

The room was still dark.

He tried to close his eyes and go back to sleep.

But that memory lingered and persisted and haunted.

“Fine.”

He got out of bed, pulled on his robe, and walked into the training room.

Master Shinowa was not in there.

Good.

He went to the middle of the room and sat on the floor. He closed his eyes and let his thoughts travel down whatever paths they chose.

***

Elsie appeared before him in a poof cloud of a wedding dress.

Hildreth appeared beside her. He was dressed in a tuxedo.

She took him in her arms.

They danced through a crowd of vampires, staking them in lazy, graceful moves as if it were a part of their dance.

Elsie disappeared.

Master Initskay took her place.

Hiildreth staked him.

The stake fell on the floor.

Master Shinowa picked it up.

He staked Hildreth.

And that was the end.

***

Hildreth opened his eyes.

Master Shinowa stood before him.

    1. Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked it. When I wrote the part with Master Initskay, I was in one of those weird writer zones. I felt like I was transcribing a scene from a movie or some sort of anime.

By the way, just a fair head’s up. When I do (finally) finish this story, I have another, completely separate story that I’m going to post on here. Just like Ambrose and Elsie, it’s based on a series of short stories I wrote a couple of years back. It’s about an alien named Lord Deama who has been banished to Earth for his wrongdoings, but his faithful serf/love interest, Asree, is determined to bring him back.

Those stories were based on a handful of writing prompts on Writer’s Digest Creative Writing Prompt forum. So, they’re pretty episodic at the moment. It’ll take some work to get them into a nicely streamlined shape, but I am so looking forward to it. 😀

  1. I liked the flittering rice paper in the beginning of this section. A lot of interesting things were revealed in this dream and I liked how he goes and kind of meditates but his thoughts are sucked back into a dreamlike state.
